Types of orthodontics

At Oral Laser, we handle Conventional Orthodontics (with brackets) and Invisible Orthodontics. The latter is more esthetic, but not all patients are candidates for it, so it is essential to attend an assessment appointment in order to make a proper diagnosis.

  • Metal brackets (Conventional) These are brackets that require small caps for bonding and are called normal metal brackets.

  • Self-ligating brackets (metallic or transparent) There are two types: metallic and ceramic; the most esthetic is the ceramic one.

  • Ceramic brackets (sapphire brackets) They are a little more esthetic but also require a small cap to tie the wire.

About Orthodontics

Orthodontics serves to diagnose, prevent and treat problems in the alignment of teeth and their relationship with the jaws that support them, but mainly to improve people's quality of life.

The ideal professional to perform orthodontic treatment is the ORTHODONTICIST; since this is a specialty of dentistry thattakes 3 years: It is not a professional who is a general dentist, it is not a professional who has done a diploma or a weekend course as you see a lot here in the city. It has to be a specialist in orthodontics who has made the specialty in one of the universities that are endorsed by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Colombia.

Orthodontic treatment begins when the patient requires it; more or less in children it can begin at 9 or 10 years of age depending on each case (it is very important to evaluate each individual case).

There is really NO SPECIFIC AGE. We have from very young patients to very adult patients; the most important thing is to see that they meet the requirements to be able to start it and also that they do need treatment.

Today there are many ways to align your teeth, however, choosing the right treatment method requires time and careful consideration. There are some factors to consider such as: Aesthetics, hygiene, comfort and budget.

The treatment lasts as long as the orthodontist needs to achieve the objectives. There are treatments that are very short (if the patient does not need so many things) and treatments that take longer. It all depends on the malocclusion of each patient and their particularities. EVERY SMILE IS DIFFERENT.

No, although some people may experience some sensitivity sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks, this will be back to normal in a few days.

During orthodontic treatment, great care must be taken with food; during orthodontic treatment, hard or viscous things cannot be eaten to prevent the brackets from falling off. When they fall off, they make the treatment take longer and it is worth mentioning that there are additional costs to reattach them; apart from the above mentioned, care with hygiene is essential for the orthodontic treatment to be successful.
It is very important that the patient has a very good hygiene to avoid mishaps such as:

  1. Inflammation of the gum.
  2. White spots.
  3. Caries.

If they occur during orthodontic treatment, they become a complication in which the patient has to be referred to other specialties in order to resume orthodontic treatment and this would make the treatment take longer.

Possible complications and care

Complications of orthodontic treatment

  1. Caries.
  2. White spots (initial manifestation of caries) due to poor patient hygiene.
  3. Root resorption (for this reason it is very important that the patient attends monthly follow-up appointments, follows the hygiene recommendations given by the orthodontist and takes control x-rays to evaluate how the roots of the teeth are doing and to prevent further complications).
  4. Inflammation of the gum.
